Reasons for Adderall Abused?

There are many reasons why Adderall is abused. One reason Adderall is abused is to get "high." Stimulants such as Adderall can increase alertness, attention, and energy, which are accompanied by increases in blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing. Another reason Adderall is abused is for weight loss (see Adderall and Weight Loss). Weight loss is a common side effect of Adderall. Adderall is also sometimes abused by students who do not have ADHD, but feel that it helps them perform better in school.

How is Adderall Abused

There are many ways that Adderall is abused. While some people abuse Adderall by taking it the way it was designed to be taken (by mouth), others may inject, smoke, or snort Adderall.

Possible Consequences of Adderall abuse?

The consequences of Adderall abuse can be extremely dangerous. Taking high doses of a stimulant can result in an irregular heartbeat, dangerously high body temperatures, and/or the potential for cardiovascular failure or seizures. Taking high doses of some stimulants repeatedly over a short period of time can lead to hostility or feelings of paranoia in some individuals.

Adderall should not be mixed with antidepressants or over-the-counter common cold medicine containing decongestants. Antidepressants may enhance the effects of Adderall and taking Adderall with decongestants may cause blood pressure to become dangerously high or lead to irregular heart rhythms.

Adderall Addiction Treatment

At A Center for Addiction Recovery we help clients with Adderall addiction to discover or rediscover the original problem or problems. Behavioral interventions - particularly, cognitive-behavioral therapy, a behavioral treatment approach that combines behavioral therapy, family education, individual counseling, 12-step program, drug testing, and encouragement for nondrug-related activities as well as alternative therapies are part of our meth addiction treatment. Our therapists teach our clients how to overcome problems with real-life solutions by equipping them with tools and life skills to confront and handle common obstacles encountered in life. Only when both the underlying reasons for the Adderall addiction and the Adderall addiction problem are resolved can a person become a healthy and happy member of society.

At this time, there are no proven medications for the treatment of an Adderall addiction. Antidepressants, however, may be used to manage the symptoms of depression that can accompany early abstinence from Adderall. Depending on the person's situation, the first step in treating a prescription stimulant addiction may be to slowly decrease the drug's dose and attempt to treat withdrawal symptoms. This process of detox could then be followed with one of many behavioral therapies.
