Vermont is a sparsely populated state made up mostly of forests and mountains. In spite of this the state actually has a disproportionate amount of drug abuse in nearly all categories. The New England area, whether it is an urban metropolis or rural area, is rife with substance abuse problems. This is in part due to the accumulation of wealth, employment, and population, including in Boston, New York, and Philadelphia. This network of major metropolitian areas is an incredibly profitable resource for drug gangs and those that benefit from drug use.
Therefore, even in Vermont there is steady access to all types of narcotics and substances, but a poorer understanding of the importance of addiction treatment. That is especially the case when it comes to the abuse of alcohol and medical marijuana, which is legal in the state.
In nearly all age groups, and particularly teenagers, substance abuse is very high in the state. Underage drinking, prescription pill abuse, and marijuana use are all at very high levels - in fact marijuana abuse is as much as 50% in Vermont as the national average. Something else that contributes to this problem is the lack of availability of addiction treatment. Rural areas of America often just do not have drug rehab facilities or even support groups, and that is certainly the case in small-town Vermont. Vermont has fewer drug rehab facilities than almost any other state in America and most of them are situated in what few areas amount to population centers there.
Unfortunately this has dire consequences for many people in the state; thousands of addicts go without opportunity or access for drug rehab treatment. Even worse still is the prevalant attitude towards substance abuse that society encourages, which in this case include the popularity of rampant marijuana use and binge drinking. Advertisements, entertainment, and social settings are all over encouraging people into addictive behaviors and few if any encouraging them to get out of it. Therefore it is not at all unusual for alcoholics to continue their habits for years at a time with few if anyone at all ever asking them if they have a problem or confronting them and asking them to get help. Even the chronic health problems that drinking and drugs create are not enough to bring up the issue of addiction when it is in a social setting that is motivated to consume and have a good time.
Education is one of the most important and undervalued aspect of dealing with addiction. Far too many people believe that drug experimentation, even at a young age, is harmless. Americans also tend to accept the use of alcohol and prescription drugs without understanding or being able to indentify risky and dangerous side effects. And most of all, there is a complete lack of understanding about how important a drug rehab is to beat a chronic addiction. Alcoholism is the most common form of drug addiction in the nation and yet many do not realize how difficult quitting it is. Slowing down or quitting drinking completely is how many people approach the problem. But quitting is just a small part of the battle. Emotional and psychological development must occur that will make someone want to stay sober and that is what our facilities are most accomplished at. Our counseling techniques and variety of addiction treatment therapies re-build emotional health, self-esteem, and healthy social relationships in our patients so that once the intensive treatment is over they can go back to their normal lives with a low risk of relapse.
