Sober Living – Life After Drug Rehab

Living a sober life during rehab is easier because you have all the support and tools needed to get through each day. Don’t misunderstand me, I’m not suggesting recovery is easy, but I wonder: Once you leave rehab, what’s it like?

Imagine a world in which you can focus your energy on positive things—like enjoying the morning sunshine, having friends who care about you, and not worrying about “how high they can get with you.”  The days filled with fear of getting caught by the cops are over.

That’s the new path you’re on. But sober life after rehab requires constant effort, which is the true test to oneself. Your old “friends” and your old “monster” want to bring you into old habits; they want the “old you.” But a life of drugs and alcohol simply block normal reactions to ‘life’ and ‘pain,’ which I’m sure you know. It isn’t the real world, and you know it. That’s why you’re sober. By attending support group meetings, you’ve found new friends who care about your sobriety.

Their support helps you make it through the day; you find understanding and compassion in the groups by realizing that drug addiction is a lot more common and serious than you imagined.  You aren’t alone, others have walked the same road you’re walking now, and can help you through the tough spots. Soon—who knows—you’ll be helping others get sober.

Now that you’re sober, you’ll find that hanging out with friends while sober is still a lot of fun. You won’t need to surround yourself with people who drink or get drugged because you’ve moved to a better place.  You will have the chance to make all kinds of new friends who are in recovery. You’ll improve your eating habits, maybe try yoga or meditation, concentrate on your job and family, and maybe even join a gym. You might consider volunteering your time to help kids or others in recovery.

There is so much life after you recover, you’ll begin to wonder why you waited so long.
