You did great! Everyone—especially you, is very proud of you. You made a commitment to get into an arduous recovery process, and you accomplished that. You toughed it out even when it got tougher, when all you really wanted to do was simply quit and get back to your old ways. It would have been easier to sink back into drug addiction. But you didn’t, and now rehab is over! You’re in recovery, you’re going to meetings. You ask yourself—“Well now what…what’s next?”
For many people, finishing a rehab, and then returning home, is a formula for failure. The patient still needs more therapy, more structure, and a place from which to begin anew. For many people, a follow-up program is essential to a successful recovery. Many people suffer from more than just addiction or more than just one addiction, and clinical treatment after a rehab often makes the difference between relapse and recovery. When looking for the right after-program, be sure to check out what is offered, who is responsible and what credentials they have; your treatment center is more than just a room with four walls. What you want to keep an eye for is that the staff is as dedicated to your recovery as you are.
Dual-diagnosis, comorbidity of multiple addictions, and length of time in recovery all contribute to the specialized information required for making the right choice. Since underlying issues don’t “just go away,” continuation of treatment is critical for growth and improvement. Picking the right combination of treatments and programs does make a difference. So, “keep the train going” as they say, and don’t mount off till you’ve reached your destination. You are almost there.
