How Does Partial Hospitalization Work

Partial Hospitalization has been a growing concept for the past 20 years. Used in a variety of therapeutic environments, it is an application meant to satisfy both mental patients and substance abuse patients.

Here’s the way it works. Since no two people are exactly the same, the path to recovery needs to vary as well. Many patients require inpatient hospitalization, which mandates intensive and structured care. Some require outpatient programming, which permits for flexibility in schedules and lower costs. Often, a combination of the two approaches works best, and that’s partial hospitalization. In partial hospitalization, patients may spend the day in a hospital setting, and the evenings in residence at the recovery facility. This saves time, money, and stigmatization, while offering a patient the best combination of services for their needs. It’s important to note that while the reduced length of inpatient stay saves money, it does not lead to a rise in the rate of failure or add to co-existing symptoms or diseases.

It is difficult to stay in recovery for anyone. We tend to return to our comfort place, whatever that is. But although it is good to be comfortable, the truth is—addiction treatment is a process that must bring you out of your “comfort zone” in order for it to be successful.  Discuss partial hospitalization with your therapist, or members of your recovery community. It may be exactly what you need to recover.
